I have 7 days in North Island, starting and ending in Auckland. What route should I take to see as much of this place as possible?

You don't have very long so I would suggest after spending a day or two in Auckland, you do a trip south to Day 1 - Waitomo, across toRotorua. Spend Day 2 in Rotorua - Day 3 back to Auckland via Mt Maunganui at Tauranga. and perhaps via the Coromandel...........Stay overnight inWhitianga.Day 4 Whitianga to Auckland. That would take 4 days.

You could add in an extra day by going further south to Taupo for a night.

OR

Take three days north - Day 1 travel to the Bay of Islands,( It is 2 hours to Whangarei and an hour more to Paihia. ) Day 2 in and around Waitangi, Kerikeri Day 3 Coming back to Auckland down the west coast via Waipoua Forest.

Then do an overnight trip to Waitomo, Rotorua, ( overnight) driving back via Tauranga - lunch at Mt Maunganui perhaps.

Matakohe Museum-Waipoua Forest-Tane Mahuta (about 4 hrs from Auckland-a daylong return trip)

While up that way, Opononi-Bay of Islands-Kerikeri-Waiomio glowworm caves, another full day. Note, NOT Waitomo caves, they are overrun with tourists.

Perhaps extend trip to North Cape - a full day return from the Bay of Islands.

Coromandel. Two days from Auckland to take it all in.

East Cape-Gisborne-Rotorua - three full days return from Auckland.

7 days?? uh well....depends how fast you drive ;p but, close to auckland is 90 mile beach, or cape reinga (very tip of nz) umm waitomo caves? coromandel...

but ok, dunno if you could do this in 7 days but, start at auckland, drive down east of nz, go to waitomo caves, then new plymouth/taranaki if you wanna check out mt taranaki, dow, down, visit palmerston north is you want, then onto wellington, the capital!! then back up, on the west side, visit napier/hastings, and you could skip that whole right arm (unless you wanna go to gisborne) and instead go straight up, visit lake taupo/taupo, rotorua, then hamilton or tauranga/mt maunganui, and then either thames or coromandel...and then back to auckland :) and if you STILL have time, then i guess, up to 90 mile beach and cape reinga~~~though yeah, this may be a tad unrealistic....

you could just visit the major cities~

Coromandel. The Forgotten Highway out of Taranaki, the Central Plateau; in fact, as little of State Highway One as possible.
